EARLY LIFE/

CHILDHOOD

Kevin's parents died when he was only seven years old. Other members of the family looked after him. His sisters and brothers showed him how to hunt bush food. older people taught him how to respect the land. He also learnt about healing. the most important things he learned, though, were to respect all the family and to look after them. He remembers the big lagoon outside Condoblin, where he grew up in Murie. It was their favourite place to camp.

EDUCATIONAL EXPERIENCES In 1957 tragedy struck for Kevin, who was then in his twenties. He was sent to prison for murder, where he spent fourteen and a half years in prison, but he didn't wast his time there. He read and studied, and he began to write. He wrote his play "THE CHERRY PICKERS." This was the first ever written by an Aboriginal. He had a book of poetry published. All his life, even as a child, he had loved poetry. He also began painting, as well. He wrote songs and drew pictures. While in prison he educated himself to become a poet, playwrite, writer and artist.

PERSONAL QUALITIES Kevin Gilbert's qualities in life are poetry, painting, drawings and playwrite. He also defends himself because his parents died when he was only seven years old. When Kevin was send to prison, were he wrote poetry.

BELIEFS Through his writing and painting and poetry he wants to get all Australians thinking about justice and the land. He believes that there's a place for all Australians in this land, for Aborigines as well as everyone else, but he also believes that, first of all, all Australians must stop the injustice and inhuman treatment Aborigines still get. Only then will we begin to respect each other and become equal in our sharing of the land.

ACHIEVEMENTS Kevin's Achievements are; he read and studied and he began to write. He wrote his play THE CHERRY PICKERS. This was the first ever written poem buy an Aboriginal. H e had a book of poetry published. All these skills he now used for his people. He had two major books published "BECAUSE A WHITE MAN'LL NEVER DO IT" and "LIVING BLACK" and two collections of his poems "END OF DREAMTIME" and "PEOPLE ARE LEGENDS". Kevin is glad to be black. He thinks it's good. If you ask him what he likes doing most he'd probably say 'stirring'!
